The president of the Ecologists Party of Greece, Dimosthenis Vergis, was arrested on Monday morning in the area of Exarcheia in downtown Athens.
Vergis was sentenced to 37 years and six months imprisonment without parole by the Three Member Criminal Court for the encroachment of 452,000-square-meter property in Agios Stefanos, northern Attica.
The property, with an estimated cost of over 8 million euros, was part of the local forest land belonging to the Greek State and the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP), even though the accused argues that the state had no claim over the land.
The court found that Vergis created “non-existent property rights” and forged documents to prove that the property was not in fact part of the forest land./greekreporter/- Oculus News
