Several low-level public officials have been arrested on corruption and other charges, authorities said this week.
One of those arrested was the head of the municipal water supply department in Elbasan.
Altin Cenolli was being investigated over financial irregularities at work, and the investigation meant his phone was bugged by police, leading to other charges, unrelated to his work.
Cenolli was arrested on charges of bribing two university professors to give good grades to students, whose families paid the official in compensation.
He is accused of passive corruption and also abuse of post. Three other people, including two university professors, are also under investigation.
In Kruja, two officials with the power corporation and a businessman were arrested for cooperating to get a power supply line illegally to the business in return for a bribe.
Seven other officials of the taxation department in capital Tirana were arrested for letting different businesses operate without being taxed, or remaining unregistered.
They were accused of fiscal evasion on some 50 businesses in the capital.
Three traffic police officers were fired from their posts and a penal case started against them for asking for bribes from drivers of heavy vehicles driving in the capital./TT/
