The Iranian billionaire, Babak Zanjani, the richest person in the Islamic Republic of Iran, was sentenced to death after being convicted on corruption charges, the main international media reports.
Iran's Judiciary announced today penalties for Zanjani and two other defendants.
Zanjani has emerged during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for his ability to help Iran, as to avoid international sanctions and to sell oil abroad. He was convicted of fraud and other economic crimes. Zanjani must also pay compensation to the state for its losses. He was arrested in December 2013. His wealth at that time was $ 14 billion.Defendants can appeal the decision of the Judiciary.
