West German journalist Hari Ham (Harry Hamm, 1922-1979) was born in Amsterdam.
He served with the German forces in World War II and was taken prisoner of war in the Soviet Union (1945-1949).
After his return to Germany he studied political science in Frankfurt and Montpellier and worked as journalist for the popular daily Die Welt and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. In August 1961 Hami took a rare visa to visit Albania, precisely at a time of great political tumult.
There he experienced the political division between Albania and the Soviet Union and the beginning of a new alliance with the revolutionary China.
