Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama during a conference with Chancellor Merkel on Monday criticized foreign countries for their interference in the politics of the Western Balkan at a time when concern is widespread about the impact of Russia in the region.
In this way begins the Reuters report of Berlin meeting between Albanian Prime Minister and the German Chancellor, noting that "Rama did not mentioned the name of Russia, but diplomats from the region have complained that Russia is trying to increase its influence in countries such as Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia and Albania also."During the meeting with Merkel, Rama stressed that third forces are ready to use moments of uncertainty to undermine our relations and the EU.
Reuters notes that the head of the German Secret Service has raised concerns this month that Russia may seek to intervene in national elections next year.
Rama stressed that his country will continue to move towards EU membership.
Also speaking before the meeting, Merkel praised the domestic political reforms in Albania, but said further steps needed to be taken, such as judicial reform and the fight against corruption, reports Reuters.
