Hoyt Brian Yee at Serbia's economic summit gave some messages that may not be pleasing to the leaders of this state.
Serbia aims to accelerate EU membership by several years, while relating to some issues Serbia has held an opposite attitude of tha of EU, as was the case of Ukraine's crisis-stance involving Russia.
He has made it clear that Serbia can not hold double stance.Yee has also mentioned to Serbs what is allegedly the center of Russian intelligence services, near the border with Kosovo.
He said he did not understand why the staff of a Russian humanitarian center should receive diplomatic immunity.
"Countries wishing to join the EU must clearly indicate this decision. You can not sit on two seats, especially when they are far off," Yee said.
He said states should choose the side, regardless of how difficult it is. He said that Serbia has many friends in the US, especially when it comes to euro-integration.
"It is crucial to focus, because this is happening much in Serbia and the Balkans. It is important to focus on the citizens' wishes and the main problems," he said.
Asked whether the US will help in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, Yee said that his state is locked from the start and that the participation in this process led by EU is not a secret, as Metro reports.
Speaking of the situation in the Western Balkans, he said that the US wants the states to be stable, so that they do not turn into problems later.
"There is still a risk of conflict where there are outstanding disputes. However, the overall trend in issues of peace and stability is positive," the US official added..
