EUROSTAT: Only 5% of Albanian asylum seekers were accepted, the last in Europe

 Although we are listed in countries with high number of asylum seekers, only 5% of the decisions taken by member states are positive. Eurostat released today data on asylum seekers who were granted protection in 2017.

In 2017, over 22,000 Albanians sought asylum for the first time in one of the EU states, runked seventh after the asylum seekers leaving conflict and war. But according to the European Union data, only 5% of the decisions on these applications have been positive.

The chances of providing the Albanian asylum seekers with protection in one of the member countries are low, given that Albania is a country that aims to get integrated into the European Union and is not involved in conflicts.

The admission rate varies between citizenship

The degree of recognition, that is, the share of positive decisions in the overall number of decisions, was 46% for first instance decisions in the EU.

The results of decisions on asylum applications vary between the countries of citizenship of asylum applicants.

Among the twenty leading states of asylum applicants, in which decisions were made in the first instance in 2017, EU recognition rates ranged from about 5% for Albanian citizens to 94% for Syria and 92% for Eritrea .


The 28 member states of the European Union provided protection to 538,000 asylum seekers in 2017, down of 25% compared to 2016. Also, member states accepted some 24,000 refugees displaced from other countries.

The group that received the most support from the EU in 2017 remained Syrians (175.8 thousand people or 33% of the total number of persons granted protection, the latter were Afghans with about 100.7 thousand refugees or 19% of the total and Iraqis with 64 thousand or 12% of the total.

The number of positive decisions to be granted to Syrian refugee asylum seekers in one of the EU states has fallen compared to the previous yea. About 70% of them benefited defense in Germany.
