The talks on border changes between Kosovo and Serbia are a bad principle and they open the possibility for issues within Kosovo not to be solved, said to Radio Free Europe, Bruce Hitchner, professor of international relations at the American University - Tufts.
"I think it's a bad principle. I think none of these questions (problems in the region) will be solved with border changes. First of all, this opens the possibility not to solve even the situation within Kosovo. Secondly, it may potentially destabilize Serbia, which has other ethnic groups in its territory and which can suddenly decide to have greater interest in territorial affairs. This does not help the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina," said Hitchner.According to him, this is a turning back on the international community's policy of opposing divisions and that this would only confirm a new way of ethnic cleansing.
"The United States has taken a careful stance on this issue, will look carefully the conclusions of these talks, although I think that at the end of the day there will be nothing of this. However, the US is willing to look at this opportunity by keeping the doors open. I understand this principle in a way, but I also think that you can not just focus on finding something that looks like a pragmatic solution, the potential consequences of which are far greater," Professor Hitchner said in the interview.
He thinks that the solution to Kosovo and Serbia can never be established through who controls which part of the territory through borders.
