One in four Russian diplomats in Switzerland is a secret agent. This comes out by the confidential assessment of the Confederation's Federal Council, which Le Matin Dimanche and SonntagsZeitung have.
In its recent report, the government itself has already warned against this situation, without mentioning the name of a particular country. The investigation of two newspapers, however, made it clear that it was Russia. The Confederation Information Service (SIC) has counted Russian intelligence agents with diplomatic passports. The staff is located in the Bern Embassies and Consulates of Zurich, Lausanne and Geneva, but the core information activities are traditionally held in Geneva. There are several spying operations that have taken place in Switzerland over the last few months, some of which have targeted in particular the Spiez laboratory and the world anti-doping agency.
