The Albanian part of Ohrid Lake is proposed to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage and World Heritage List, were are included only very few such "treasures".
The proposed scope includes all of the Albanian part of Ohrid Lake, the Lin Peninsula, the north coast of the Macedonian border, and Drilon's springs with streams linking them to Ohrid Lake.The UNESCO appraisal team has completed its evaluation visit in September for the file submitted by Albania in February this year. The decision is expected to be taken in June 2019 at the annual meeting of the UNESCO Committee.
This process is vital to this region and its inhabitants.
The project "Towards a Common Governance of the Transboundary Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Lake Region", implemented by UNESCO and funded by the European Union and the Albanian Ministry of Environment, focuses both on the protection of cultural heritage as well as the nature of nature .
The project aims to highlight the many values of this area, as well as addressing the major threats they face through a sustainable development approach.
Ohrid Lake, one of the oldest lakes in the world, located in Southeast Europe, is considered one of the largest biodiversity reserves and one of the oldest human settlements in the continent. The combination of visible natural values, the quality and diversity of cultural, material and spiritual heritage make this region truly unique.
