Albania continues to have the highest public debt in the region and among the highest in Europe in relation to Gross Domestic Product. By the end of the second quarter of 2018, public debt in Albania was 66.3 percent of GDP, ranking 15th out of 34 countries in Europe and the Balkan region, according to Eurostat and European Commission data.
In the region, Albania has similar levels of debt with Montenegro, while Serbia which once ruled with over 70% lowered this indicator to 55.9% of GDP at the end of the second quarter. Macedonia has a debt of about 44% of GDP, Bosnia 36.3 and Kosovo has the lowest, with about 16%.The average debt in the 28 member countries reached from 81.5% of GDP to 81.0% of GDP. Compared to the second quarter of 2017, the debt ratio in the EU fell from 83.4% to 81.0%, according to Eurostat.
