Former secret police director of Macedonia Sasho Mijalkov has been detained, as Skopje's Basic Court has imposed a 30-day detention measure.
The Basic Court said to Radio Free Europe that the former director of the Security and Counter-Intelligence Department was arrested at the Special Prosecution's request because of the risk of possible escape, while the pre-trial judge assigned 30 days of detention. The former chief of the secret police is being tried for abuse of office in at least four processes involving manipulation of the electoral process, commissioned violence against former Interior Minister Lube Boskovski, financial misuse, and other criminal offenses.
Otherwise, Sasho MIjallokov is the first cousin of former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, who has also been sentenced to two years in prison, while other judicial proceedings are underway for abuse of official duty. Sasho Mijalkovsky's arrest comes several hours after Nikola Gruevski announced he has received political asylum status by Hungarian authorities where he has been sheltered, shortly after police begun seeking for him for sentencing in jail.
