In Albania, the upcoming local elections will be held on June 30, 2019. The decision was taken today by the President Ilir Meta. Last week, the head of state, organized consultations on this issue with the heads of the parliamentary groups, while today had a meeting with Parliament Speaker Gramoz Ruçi.
In the recent local elections, the Left-Wing coalition led by Prime Minister Edi Rama's Socialist Party and the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI) won the overwhelming majority of 61 municipalities in the country. The left managed to get 45 municipalities. Under its lead all the major cities of the country passed, with the exception of Shkodra, which remained in the Right Wing. The coalition of Right-Wing parties, led by the Democratic Party, won only 15 municipalities. While the municipality of Finiq in the south of the country was won by the Party of "Greek Ethnic Minority for the Future".Just as in the past, the problem seems to remain the electoral reform. Although a special parliamentary commission is being held for almost two years, there is still no agreement between the parties.
