Study about Internet Security for Children in Albania: About 75 percent are looking for help


 UNICEF published a study of a secure Internet in Tirana. Children claim widely they see online material with physical violence and sexual abuse.

UNICEF hosted a Safer Internet Summit in Tirana for Albanian children and teenagers.

According to surveys, the average age when children enter the Internet for the first time is 9 year-old, and even 1/3 of them are 8 year-old.

On average, every child stays online 3 hours a day, says the study.

1 in 5 children claim to have seen images of violence or online abuse, while 1 out of 10 claim to have seen content that is related to suicide and unwanted online material.

Surveys indicate that children are communicating online with someone they do not know, while half of them have personally met someone known from the internet.

About 75 percent of the children are looking for help and support from the peers, while parents are only aware of 10 percent of these events.

The children surveyed claim that over 75 percent of them do not have any control or supervision by parents when they watch online videos, when they visit social networks or when exchanging messages.

More than half of them use a computer or phone camera without the knowledge of their parents

Half of the children surveyed claim to have the opportunity to access the Internet whenever they want.

Nearly 75 percent of surveyed children use the phone every day, mainly smartphones  for social entertainment and social discussions,  youtube, instagram, facebook and What's app.

Children surveyed have more skills in online technologies than their parents.

About 25 percent of them say they have experienced at least an upset event online, and images of physical violence but do not confess this to the adults.
