For the first time in the democratic history of Albania, a President of the Republic returns for parliamentary scrutiny of the state budget.
Through a press release, the Presidency announced that the Head of State, Ilir Meta, has not enacted the law on the 2019 budget, In his argument, the President appreciates broad public consensus on student demands, which are considered by all political actors as fair, legitimate and feasible. According to him, the return of the budged for review aims the best interest in meeting the social objectives set forth in the Article 59 of the Constitution, as well as in ensuring stability in the country.
While the reaction of Prime Minister Edi Rama was immediate through Twitter: "Interesting! The President turns back Albania's budget after the presantation of the SMI requests. No wonder! Is continuing in any form the pressure on students to stay up against the dialogue. Friends! Get out of the trap of that choir and become individuals who speak in your own name."
Meanwhile the opposition also returned to the Assembly some month after boycotts. The opposition mandated some MPs to seek legal changes in favor of students. The chairman of the SMI parliamentary group called for the introduction of priority for reviewing the proposals made by his party to amend the budget for meeting the requirements of the students.
On the other hand the Democratic Party demands the collapse of the entire law on higher education.
