In 2018, 122,743 asylum applications are reported in France, a figure 22 percent higher than in 2017, the Refugee Office announced.
France is second in terms of the number of asylum seekers in the EU after Germany. The applications come mainly from Afghanistan, Albania, Georgia, Guinea and Ivory Coast, French media reports.This is a new rise in asylum applications filed in France compared to last year, when the number of 100,000 applications is exceeded for the first time, an increase of 17% compared to 2016.
Last year, according to OFPRA, 46,700 people were placed under refugee status protection, an increase of nine percent compared to 2017.
The asylum received 36 per cent of applicants, including decisions of the National Asylum Council (CNDA).
The main countries of origin of asylum seekers are Afghanistan (10221 requests), Albania (8261), Georgia (6717), Guinea (6621) and Ivory Coast (5256). Compared with 2017, Albania's demand dropped by 28 percent, while those from Georgia (+ 256%), Guinea (+ 61%) and Ivory Coast (+ 45%) increased.
By comparison, according to provisional figures, Germany recorded 174,000 applications in the first 11 months of 2018 and Italy 54,000 requests.
