The Miners of the Metallurgical Combine of Trepca in Kosovo entered the sixth day of the strike. They say the strike will continue until the required conditions are met. Miners are looking for a 20 percent wage increase, the dismissal of the Board of the Combine, stopping the recruitment of staff without competition and creating better working conditions.
Workers are also seeking to adopt the Trepca statute as soon as possible, as foreseen by the Law on Trepça. The Chairman of the Trepça Workers' Union, Shyqyri Sadiku, told to Radio Free Europe that they are waiting for the conditions to be meet, as this is the reasob they went on strike."The strike is continuing, we are waiting. The disputes we had with the Minister of Economic and Development, Valdrin Lluka, about the two points of the request, we have approximated these points, while regarding the point one, which is the salary increase and the point two that is the discharge of the board, we have not reached agreement and we are waiting. We will be striking until our demands are met", Sadiku said.
Kosovo Economy Minister Valdrin Lluka asked on Wednesdatothe miners to terminate the strike, suggesting that there can be no salary increases. Lluka told Radio Free Europe that wage growth by 20 percent is currently unlikely due to the financial situation in this country. As for the request for the dismissal of the Board, Lluka has said that is the Government who decides on this issue.
