US Ambassador to Serbia, Kyle Scott, said Serbia is on the wrong side of history when it comes to its attitude to the crisis in Venezuela.
"The Venezuelan people are hungry under the dictatorial rule and more than 50 countries in Latin America, North America and Western Europe have stood by the people of Venezuela and the provisional president Guaido," Scott said on Twitter.Narod Venecuele gladuje pod nelegalnom vladavinom diktatorskog režima. Više od 50 država Latinske Amerike, Severne Amerike i Zapadne Evrope stale su uz narod Venecuele i privremenog predsednika Gvaida. Srbija je na pogrešnoj strani istorije. https://t.co/XfpUNTCKzl— Ambassador Kyle Scott (@usambserbia) February 20, 2019
"About 50 countries around the world have recognized the opposition leader Huan Guaido as Venezuela's provisional president. Serbia is on the wrong side of history."
The contested president, Nicolas Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, has been criticized at home and abroad for the weak economy in Venezuela. He is supported by China, Russia and several other countries. The United Nations estimated that over three million people have fled Venezuela in recent years, due to high inflation and lack of food and medication.
