Saimir Tahiri |
In Albania, the Serious Crimes Prosecution decided to file the file of the former Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri. The prosecution has called Tahiri tomorrow to communicate the charges. Subsequently, according to the procedures, will be the preliminary investigation judge who will make the final assessment whether the case will go to trial.
The former Interior Minister was under investigation since November 2017, suspected of having links to the group of brothers Habilaj, his cousins, who were part of an Italian-Albanian organization that trafficked marijuana from Albania to Italy. The investigations started after the Italian authorities hit this organization in Catania, while in the interceptions carried out, Mr. Tahiri's name was mentioned several times in conversations among traffickers. The prosecution urged the former minister's arrest, but the Government, refused the request by claiming that had not submitted any evidence. While in May last year, Mr. Tahiri resigned from the mandate of the deputy. Shortly thereafter, the prosecution demanded his arrest. Mr. Tahiri spent a short period of house arrest, after which the Court of Appeal allowed his investigation into a free state.
The former Interior Minister has repeatedly requested publicly that the Prosecution 'does not drag' the investigation into him.
