EU funds of research, Albania and Montenegro the last in the region

 

 The advancement in innovation and science are the toughest conditions that Albania has to fulfill to join the EU. But, according to the latest published data, Albania is among the last countries that has benefited from research funding. According to the data, 26 participants have benefited funds, accounting for 0.01% of the total Horizon 2020 funds.

In line with the high percentage of proposals, Switzerland is the most active country associated with participation, with 2,808 participations, about 37% of the participations of participating countries.

Norway, Israel and Turkey account for 23%, 17% and 9% of the associated countries' participation. In line with their application models, the associated countries with the largest share (less than 1% of associates' associates) are Tunisia, Moldova, Georgia, Montenegro, Albania, Armenia and the Faroe Islands.

In 2014, Albania signed an agreement with the European Commission to participate in the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Research Framework Program (2014-2020) that followed the previous FP7 program. The EU Research and Innovation Framework Program Horizon 2020 focuses on the relationship between business and the scientific research community.

This latest monitoring by the European Commission sheds light on the state of international cooperation within Horizon 2020 after 5 years of implementation. This evidence base should inform policy discussions on the Commission's proposal for the European Horizon (2021-2027) and is a follow-up to two first Monitoring Flashes (European Commission, 2018b and 2018c) focusing on participation and co-operation of EU with Member States. This Flash provides insight into the participation of countries outside the EU, namely third countries, at Horizon 2020, based on their status in Horizon 2020.

Associated states: Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Faroe Islands, Georgia, Iceland, Israel, Northern Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine.

Third non-associated countries: countries that are not EU member states and are not linked to the Framework Program.
