Since December of last year have begun the application for legalization of illegal weapons, which the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo possess. Deputy Interior Minister, who is also the National Coordinator for Small and Light Weapons, Izmi Zeka, in a statement to Kosovo media said that the state interest is the general security of the citizens of the country.
According to him, this is a European standard practiced on the issue of legalization of weapons."First of all, it is a matter of public concern for the general security of citizens, and in this comparison exists the law on the legalization of weapons that has passed to the Kosovo parliament in 2017. This is a European standard practiced on the issue of legalization of weapons" , he said.
Zeka indicated that based on some statistics, there are over 200,000 illegal weapons in Kosovo.
"The killings and criminal acts that take place usually occur because of illegal weapons. We have been trying to create an opportunity for all those who have illegal weapons to legalize and in some way create a basic date and know where their weapons are. This standard has also been done by the Balkan countries and those of Europe, etc.," Zeka said.
He stressed that from December 17, 2018, the decision to legalize weapons has begun, and so far over 500 applications have been sent. Zeka hopes that the number of applications for legalization of weapons will increase by the end of this year.
"As of December 17, 2018, the legalization of weapons has begun, with up to 500 applications so far and we hope that the number will increase from till the end because it is in our human nature expecting the last few months ...".
Zeka also appealed to the country's institutions to engage directly in this campaign. Asked if would be fair to change any amendments to the Law on Arms Possession, so that citizens would be provided with legal weapons, he said the other aspect.
"I think the Law on Weapons is another aspect than the Law of Arms. I think that the Law on Weapons needs to be amended and adapted in some way to European standards. Perhaps this would in some way create opportunities for citizens to obtain a regular permit and to carry weapons. With the current law, the possibiliy is too small in the regulatory aspect, so that people can be equipped with carrying weapons."
While the lawyer, Musa Damati, has estimated the law on weapons should be amended in favor of facilitating the procedures for issuing permits to the citizens of the country. He said this should happen with the sole purpose of providing all ordinary citizens with possession permits in case of terrorist attacks or even robberies.
