Tirana with taxi and 100% electric cars until 2030

The citizens of Tirana will have the opportunity to monitor in real time, from the "Tirana My" application the quality of air in the capital. Intelligent devices will make this possible, marking another important step towards the Tirana Smart City.

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, said that thanks to these new intelligent devices, located in the city, accurate data on air quality can be obtained, which will then displayed in the "Tirana Ime" application. "One of the things I want to estimate is that we've got the latest technology, no one else in the region has this technology. Today we are planning on launching an application that measures air pollution in Tirana in real time, so that every citizen, as it has access to city cameras, reports, traffic, will also have access to this information. The decision making for all of us becomes easier if we all know the truth." he said.

The first devices being tested are placed in the Kashar area, at December 21 Street, at of "Elbasani Street and at Skanderbeg Square. The Intelligent sensors will transmit in real-time data over the network directly to the "Tirana Ime" application. This information will, on the one hand, raise citizens' awareness of such an important aspect of our lives, such as air quality, but will also serve the relevant institutions as an indicator for the development of strategies aimed at reducing air pollution, the protection of the environment, namely the improvement of the quality of life in the capital.

On the other hand, Mayor Veliaj reflected the results listed in my "Tirana Ime" application for the past 3 years, listing over 90,000 downloads, 3 million visits to the app, and 23,000 reports from citizens.

Meanwhile, to reduce the level of pollution in the capital, the Municipality of Tirana is working in parallel with other initiatives such as the project for planting 2 million new trees by 2030 or "Days Without Cars". Veliaj expressed the need for at least one day a month in the capital without cars.

"Every month we have to have at least one car free day, in order for the city to get the oxygen and recover the pollution from the cars. The first proposal is that the dates May 5 and June 1, namely Martyrs Day and Children's Day, make these days without cars. These are marked dates, but they are also justifications to have a day without cars dedicated to pedestrians," he said.

To protect the health of citizens, Tirana will transform the entire public transport service. In presenting the new application services "Tirana Ime", Veliaj said that the aim of the taxi fleet in the capital is to be 100% electrical or hybrid, which bring less pollution.

"In addition to 2 million trees, we set the target that 100% of taxis be electric or hybrid within 2025. In fact, over half of the taxis operating today in Tirana are electric or hybrid. So, I believe we will catch the WHO target much earlier," he said. The change will also affect urban transport, where the bus fleet will soon be on the streets of the capital. "100% of the buses will be electric within 2030, an operation that we start now and we have 11 years ahed in order to realize it," Veliaj said.
