Kosovo police arrested five people in Pristina on Wednesday, under suspicions of involvement in illegal transplantation and trafficking of human organs and cells.
A police announcement states that on April 2 and 3, an operation was conducted in controling a private clinic in Pristina and the arrest of suspected persons for the commission of criminal offenses: "illegal transplantation and trafficking of human organs and cells and irresponsible medical treatment".According to the police, investigations began several months ago, while during the controls were sequestered as material evidence: medical records, evidence books, 4 mobile phones and 500 euros in cash.
The clinic was closed while to 4 of the arrested individuals is assigned a detention measure of 48 hours.
The police did not give more details about the operation.
Kosovo still has no organ transplant law and a bill drafted long ago that was back after the closure of a private clinic in 2008 where doctors from Kosovo and one from Turkey had carried out illegal kidney transplants.
