Alexander the Great in Athens |
The official Athens erected today the first statue of Alexander the Great, a project dating back to the 90s, but has long sparked debate in the complexity of politics and mainly of the bureaucracy.
This statue, about 3.50 meters tall of Alexander the young, in bronze, was placed on a promenade in the center of Athens, in front of a statue of Lord Byron.According to the municipality, the statue was completed in 1972 and was bought by the state in 1992, at a time when nationalist sentiments were mostly aggravated in the face of the claim of the name "Macedonia" from Skopje, which had just declared the independence.
Athens Mayor Jorgos Kaminis stressed in connection with this fact that this decision had nothing to do with the name dispute of former Macedonia.
