The Kosovar footballer who plays for the team of Linkopings FC and defends the colors of the Swedish state said that this is among the first cases of such a reverence to a sporting woman.
"WOW. I am extremely proud to be among the first female footballers to be honored with a statue in Sweden.
With the 'Football Forever' initiative, launched by Coca-Cola and the Swedish Football Federation, we want to emphasize the importance of increasing the visibility for female players.
"Together we can create gender equality in Swedish football. Together we write the history," wrote the Albanian footballer on her Facebook account.
The footballer from Mitrovica counts 126 appearances for Sweden's national team, and has scored 32 goals.
Alongside with the Albanian, the Football Federation of Sweden has built statues also for three other players: Caroline Seger, Nilla Fischer and Hedvig Lindahl.
