 The Supreme Court in Podgorica convicted the 14 accused persons of planning the violent coup plot against the Montenegrin Government in October 2016 in order to prevent Montenegro from joining NATO.

"Their goal was the violent crash of the Governemnt in Montenegro," said the Court President Suzana Mugosha. Montenegrin authorities say that the Serbian and Russian nationalists have plotted to invade the Parliament during parliamentary elections, to kill the then Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and to install a pro-Russian leader.

Criminal convictions include two Montenegrin pro-Russian opposition leaders, another Montenegrin citizen, nine Serbian citizens, and two Russians who have been tried in absentia. The Prosecutors have charged the two Russian military intelligence officers for organizing the suspected coup. The Kremlin has denied the involvment of the "Russian state mechanisms".
