Ramush Haradinaj |
Speaking about French President Emanuel Macron's meeting with his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic on Monday in Belgrade, Haradinaj thanked Macron for "expressing sincerity when he said Kosovo and Serbia are European countries."
While on Macron's request for compromise, Haradinaj said that for Kosovo, one of the options of this compromise could be the abolition of the tax in exchange for recognition from Serbia.
"The compromise is whether we remove the tax in exchange for recognition. So it's not that we do not compromise ... is a big compromise. A compromise could be, for example, the abolition of the tax - the establishment of other trade relations. Whereas, what Kosovo has asked for is very basic. We have requested a framework agreement for mutual recognition in the existing boundaries with the accompanying elements. This framework-agreement should be the framework for which we negotiate and there is nothing other than what is presented. Hesitant is that Serbia or a part of the international community is saying we can not name the mutual recognition in the existing borders," Haradinaj said.
He said Kosovo does not have to sit down with Serbia on the table "without a framework agreement that has the name of mutual recognition in the existing borders". But he expressed optimism that France's role in this area could change the situation.
"I think the role of France and President Macron is growing and I welcome this role and I think that this commitment can bring Serbia back to the table even without removing the taxes," Haradinaj said.
President Macron said on Monday at a press conference in Belgrade that there is no concrete response to compromise, but there is no magic solution and no one has the solution in his pocket. The French president underlined that the agreement between Kosovo and Serbia is very important for the security of the region.
Macron also spoke about organizing a meeting between Kosovo and Serbia leaders together with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel after saying that "France wants the agreement to be reached".
We remind that for the last time Kosovo and Serbian leaders met on June 29 at the Berlin Summit, with the participation of Merkel and Macron, without achieving any concrete results.
