The Albanian Parliament is set to convene this afternoon at 17:00 in plenary session and has a hot topic in the agenda - the mandate of the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta.
The assembly is expected to set up an investigative commission that will decide on dismissing of Meta from the position of the President of the Republic.
The request for the establishment of this commission was made by a group of Socialist Party MPs, following President Meta's decree to annul the local elections he had signed on June 30 and to declare October 13 as a new date for holding the local elections.
President Meta's decision to cancel June 30 has caused fierce clashes between the Government and the opposition Presidency. The government ignored the decree of the President and organized the elections, although the opposition boycotted these elections. But the grieving majority with Meta's stance started the process of his dismissal.
The Assembly's decision to dismiss the President has binding effect only if the Constitutional Court finds that the President has committed any violation of the Constitution. But, the Constitutional Court is dysfunctional and, according to the dynamics of the process, it seems that will not be able to function quickly, not even this year.
However, at today's session of the Assembly is expected to be elected an investigative commission that will decide the fate of Meta in the Presidency. The start of the session was postponed for one hour before the scheduled time, due to the opposition's protest. The Presidency of the Assembly has taken the decision to start the session an hour earlier, to avoid tensions and eventual clashes between opposition protesters and MPs of the majority.
