According to Greek official sources, four AK 47 guns, other weapons, and more than 122,000 cartridges were found and seized in a police operation aimed at demolishing the illegal activity of a criminal group involved in trafficking weapons and ammunition from Albania to Greece.
Eleven people, including 6 Albanians, have been arrested during an operation organized by the Criminal Police Investigation Department in Crete, in co-operation with border police officers with Albania such as Gumenica and Kozani.
Greek police said the investigation revealed important data on the composition, characteristics, methodology of the operation and illegal activities of the criminal organization.
According to Greek police, "the perpetrators were found to have imported weapons and ammunition from Albania and the group consisted of two nucleus. One nucleus, according to Greek police, had been operating in Albania and was responsible for gathering the required number of ammunition, and the other operated on the island of Crete, whose members "ordered" initially the ammunition quantities.
Greek police said that the nucleus was then taken over, transported and finally distributed to interested parties previously in the ammunition market. Greek police said the weapons were transported from Albania through land and then to the island of Crete.
Greek police investigations show that from November 2018 until the arrests, this criminal group had carried out four imports of Albanian ammunition.
There is no data yet on how this weaponry was provided in Albania. Greek police photos and videos reflect the amount of well-packaged cartridges and AK47 guns known as 'Kalashnikov' in a very good condition.
