Ambassador Luigi Soreca criticizes the anti-defamation package of Albanian Government

The ambassador of the European Union in Albania, Luigi Soreca, said that the European Commission will oppose the anti-defamation package approved on July 4 by the Albanian parliament.

For the ambassador, the AMA (audio-visual media authority) cannot play a supervisory role for online media, stating that in this sense the European Union promotes the self-regulation of the media as a way to combat disinformation and fake news.

Soreca's statements

"When it comes to combating misinformation, although we have the same concerns as the Albanian authorities regarding disinformation, the commission recommends less rigorous approaches based on a regulatory approach.

This is the approach that the European Commission proposes in the document "communication and management of online disinformation". The European Commission shares the concern of other international organizations for the lack of legal clarity of the functions and powers of the audio-visual media authority in the regulation of online media, as it could have negative effects on freedom of expression."
