Gent Sejk, the Governor of Bank of Albania |
Yesterday the central bank of Albania presented the new banknote series, a very important moment not only for the bank itself but for the entire country.
After more than twenty years, in fact, the design of the banknotes has been modified with the introduction of new security elements: all this gives to the new Albanian banknote the appearance of a modern, resistant and high-quality banknote.
The presentation ceremony
During the presentation ceremony the governor of the central bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, said that the new series will be introduced gradually into circulation and that, therefore, it will be used at first along with the old banknotes.
The new Albanian banknotes |
The new banknotes will be introduced in this way:
The new 200 and 5000 leks banknotes will be put into circulation starting from 30 September 2019.
The new 10000 and 1000 leks notes will be put into circulation starting from 2020.
The new 2000 leks banknotes will be put into circulation starting from 2021.
The new 500 leks banknotes will be put into circulation starting from 2022.
The new series will also present other new features. For the first time, in fact, there will be a polymer banknote - plastic material that represents an innovation in the banknote production industry since it is more resistant than paper - the 200 leks one.
The most short-term change, however, concerns the 10 lek coins which will be replaced with a new series, which will have the same appearance, size and weight as the current one but which will differ in the year of issue and in the words "Lekë" and "Shqipërisë" (will be written with the Ë and not with the E).
