German Foreign Minister Haiko Mas during his visit to Skopje encouraged the country to continue reforms by assuring his counterpart Nikola Dimitrov that he will have the full support and assistance of Berlin.
Dimitrov himself, arguing that the EU cannot neglect the country after the compromises made, said that despite the good neighborliness of North Macedonia with Albania, when it comes to EU membership, it is better for each state to be assessed separately, on the basis of of its own merits.
“The basic principle in the accession process is: each according to the achievements in reforms. If we group states into a package and make them dependent on something that is not in their control then the logic of membership loses,” Dimitrov said.
A few days ago even French President Emmanuel Macron, who with his firm 'no', tried to explain the motives of this stance and said that member states were more positive for North Macedonia than for Albania, but the latter could not be separated due to the consequences that such a decision would have on the region.
