Fabjan Alameti, a 21-year-old Albanian living in New York, has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison. He had earlier pleaded guilty to making a false statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation when asked about his aspirations to join the terrorist organization Islamic State and a plan for revenge following the attack on a mosque in New Zealand.

He was sentenced in federal court in Missoula, Montana. Alameti was sentenced to 4 years and 9 months in prison.

Justice authorities interviewed Alameti for the first time in 2018. He later posted articles on social media in support of ISIS.

Prosecutors say he was traveling by bus to Montana on March 15 when a gunman killed 50 people at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand. Alameti had spoken online with a person unaware that he was an informant, who had disclosed his plan to attack ordinary people in retaliation, as well as his plans to launch an attack on a US military building.

He was arrested on April 3 at a shooting range in Montana.

The convict's defense lawyer said his client's statements were protected by the first amendment.
