Albanian Ambassador in China Selim Belortaja |
Status of Selim Belortaja
Today: For the first time since the outbreak of the epidemic in Wuhan, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially briefed the leaders of the diplomatic corps. The situation remains tense, with remarkable mobilization, transparency, and cooperation with the WHO, but without any determination on the immediate prospects and performance of the affected curve. We were asked to keep calm, avoid any panic that would be as the reporter said .. "more harmful than the virus itself", as well as confidence! Similar references were made (SARS in 2003 and then epidemics and other pandemics like H5N1, Ebola, etc.) from which China has gained experience and will do its best to win this battle. We were notified of emergency communication lines at the MFA (for communication from us) and at the Hubei virus hotline (027 -86122256 and 027 -87811173). Meanwhile, the virus is still not fully controllable and treatable as the figures continue to climb. To date reported:
2,823 confirmed cases of infection
5,794 suspected cases
59 healed
81 dead.
The province of Hubei with the capital, Wuhan, has the largest number of cases. While Beijing has 72 confirmed cases, 2 recovered and one death.
Almost all provinces have reported cases and most of them has been declared the state of emergency. Meanwhile, besides China and some Asian countries, the virus has already spread to other continents, including Europe.
No infected among the approximately 400 Albanians here, of whom 60 students. But developments suggest us to repeat the call for caution, avoidance of travel, and observance of instructions and rules. We only have one student in Wuhan who is making every effort to get out as this requires some permit and application procedures and 14-day quarantine rules - also the initial test came out ok! The other 3, to our knowledge, have left Wuhan and have arrived or are arriving home! We have invited all Albanians who study, work or are simply in China to get identified in the embassy with e-mail and report their status and address. We monitor the situation and report to the Chinese authorities. I urge the families of those who have made up their minds to return not to hesitate but sacrifice this time a travel ticket. The embassy has been unable to pay, and the Chinese MFA has not offered anything to fund the travel.
