Among these effects, activist Endri Haxhiraj lists the strong winds, land degradation, making cities uninhabitable, water scarcity, the start of several water wars and terrorism.
And these effects will be felt globally, even in Albania. The sea is advancing by 3.3 millimeters every year, and within the next 10 years, Durres, Shengjin and Saranda will be covered by water, while Myzeqe will become a coastal city.
On November 28, 2019, the European Parliament declared a climate emergency and on the 11th the European Council declared its agreement green.
Haxhiraj proposes that Albania declare its agreement to be at the same standard with the EU at the time of accession.
“2019 was a very lucky year, that at the end of the drought where the Albanian economy was almost kneeling, there would be no more hydro resources, thankfully it rained. But this will not happen in the years ahead. The rain may not even fall and we will be facing an energy crisis or agriculture. Agriculture is suffering a lot of water shortages,” said Mr. Haxhiraj.
Environmental activists argued the Albanian green deal with findings of various studies. In addition to rains, the rising of temperatures, periods of drought, the underwater resources will also be reduced.
Lack of land depreciation will make earthquakes feel more powerful. The consequences will be felt in the economy, loss of lives and populous land.
“If all Albanians refuse to buy a plastic bottle, we have made a difference. We need to develop an environmental conscience,” emphasized another activist, Ina Majko.
