Government of Japan grants 76,320 euros to Skrapar municipality for waste management improvement

The Japanese government awarded the Skrapar municipality a € 76,320 grant under the Government of Japan grant scheme called “Local-level Human Security Projects Grants” (GGP scheme).


The grant agreement was signed today by the Ambassador of Japan to Albania, Ito Makoto and the Mayor of Skrapar, Adriatik Mema.

Skrapar Municipality sought the assistance of the Government of Japan to resolve its waste management problem. The Japanese grant aims to improve the waste cleaning and collection service in Skrapar by acquiring a new waste collection and transportation machine as well as new bins.

The Government of Japan has been supporting Albania through the GGP grant scheme since 1998, granting grants to public institutions, local government units, and NGOs to implement projects in the fields of health, disaster prevention, environment, education, etc. Currently, the total assistance provided through this grant scheme is approximately EUR 2.1 million (JPY 258 million). With the opening of the Japanese Embassy in Albania in 2017, the number of grants and projects has been increasing year after year.

At the ceremony of signing the Grant contract, the Ambassador ITO confirmed the commitment of the Government of Japan to improve the waste management system in the Municipality of Skrapar and wished for a successful implementation of the project. For his part, Mema expressed his gratitude to the Government of Japan for the support is giving to Skrapar in the field of environment and waste management.
