The Italian authorities on Thursday seized 18 tonnes of waste destined for Albania.

The cargo was loaded onto a truck with Bulgarian license plates and seized at the port of Bari before leaving for Durres.

The waste was declared "reusable functional equipment". After the control, it was found the opposite.

It was about waste derived from about 300 former household appliances, mainly refrigerators and stoves.

Local media in Bari report that the 18-tonne cargo has been seized while the truck driver is under investigation.

A month ago the Italian authorities seized 25 tonnes of such waste containing poisonous substances under the same scheme.

The cargo was trying to be transported from the port of Ancona, about 500 kilometers north of Bari.

It is unclear whether the cases are related to each other, but dozens of barrels and asbestos-filled sacks were seized in Vlora at the same time, also hazardous waste.
