In this very friendly conversation, they first discussed the challenges of dealing with COVID-19 pandemics. President Engel informed Mr. Kurti about the situation in the United States and the concern of American citizens about the new Coronavirus. While Kurti informed Engel of the government's commitment to prevent and combat this pandemic and the measures taken so far.
Following the conversation, Engel presented in detail his position in relation to the approach of the US administration, especially Ambassador Grenell, towards the government elected on the basis of the Constitution and the democratic electoral system.
He stressed that he does not agree in any way with the intervention of who should lead Kosovo and the dialogue process with Serbia. Only the citizens of Kosovo can decide such a thing. President Engel expressed his full support for the Kurti Government in managing COVID-19, as well as respecting the free will of the citizens of Kosovo to elect their representatives. He claimed that the goal of the United States of America since 1999 has been to support the democratic and independent state of Kosovo.
The congressman also presented his views, which he expressed in his last letter to Secretary of State Pompeo, in which he called on the United States to stop heavy tactics against Kosovo, ignoring efforts to recognize Kosovo from Serbia and expanding their relations with Serbia. He stressed that the United States should not interfere in Kosovo's domestic politics, including who should lead the state and dialogue with Serbia. Congressman Engel also agreed with Kosovo's decision to remove tariffs and demanded that Millennium Challenge Corporation programs be restarted without any obstacles.
The Prime Minister thanked the citizens of Kosovo and the Albanian-American diaspora for the work and role of Congressman Engel and for his continued commitment to Kosovo. He has spent 3 decades in the region and his active commitment is accompanied by past knowledge and a clear vision for the Euro-Atlantic future of the Western Balkans.
Incumbent Prime Minister Kurti presented the need and necessity to coordinate the transatlantic relations of the United States and the European Union in the protection of interests in the Balkans, as the only way to guarantee peace, democracy and progress. The conversation ended with the full commitment of both sides for cooperation and the commitment of Congressman Engel to support diplomatic channels and public positions in defense of democracy, constitutionality and statehood of Kosovo. He expressed his readiness for constant communication regarding political developments in Kosovo.
