Military personnel in the entrance of the Nerola village |
The village on a Hill, Nerola, just out of Rome, has a population of 1,900 and has been declared a 'red zone' as 77 cases of coronavirus have been detected there.
The military has blocked the village from the rest of the country and researchers are testing the residents to learn more.

Mayor Sabrina Granieri told the media: “We are surprised. People call me and ask if we are sick. I say no, no problem. We just have to make it safe."
The epidemic there began in a nursing home and spread unnoticed by doctors.
Two people have died so far and the rest have been hospitalized.
The doctor, who has been working there since 1994, said patients initially had no signs of coronavirus but the situation worsened on Sunday.
Asked if her town was being used as a coronavirus lab, Granieri said: "We're all going to do the test. Our sacrifice will then be used by the scientific community. Researchers want to know how the virus spread to our community and how many are showing symptoms. We are alive here, and we want to stay that way. The number of patients here is very high compared to the population, so we could not risk the spread of the virus."
