Italian Prime Giuseppe Conte replies to Von der Leyen: Dear Ursula, I hear not worthy ideas of Europe

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has responded to European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, who one day earlier apologized to Italy on behalf of the EU for failing to provide assistance in these difficult moments of the confrontation with the coronavirus.

Von der Leyen apologized through the Italian media La Reppublica, saying that "Now the EU is with you", while Conte responds in the same newspaper, with a strong message that begins with the words "Dear Ursula, I hear not worthy ideas of Europe."

Further, the Italian Prime Minister thanks Von der Leyen for the statement, in which he expressed proximity and solidarity to the Italian people, and in particular to his health personnel, then challenged Europe to "show more ambition, courage and a sign of unity".

"Your words, the prime minister writes, are proof that Italians have shaken the conscience of all, crossing national borders and setting the most urgent reflection today: what Europe is ready to do for Italy, but for itself."

"It's time to show more ambition, more unity, and more courage. In the face of a storm like that of Covid-19 affecting everyone, we need a strong, European living boat that will force our united countries to take shelter,” Conte said.
