It does not wear a mask, but in these difficult moments is helping doctors save the lives of people affected by the new coronavirus. Meet Tom, the newest nurse - robot.

Tomi is one of six new robots at the Circolo hospital in Varese that is helping doctors and nurses care for patients in the most affected region in Italy of this pandemic, that of Lombardy.

"It's just like having another nurse, but not afraid of getting infected," said Dr. Francesco Dentail, who runs the intensive care at the hospital.

A child-sized robot with blinking eyes stands on the patient's bed so that doctors can take care of others who are in worse conditions.

They monitor the parameters of the equipment in the room and send them to the hospital staff. The robots have a touch face that allows patients to record messages and send them to doctors.

And most importantly, Tom and his high-tech team allow the hospital to limit the number of direct contacts of doctors and nurses with patients, thereby reducing the risk of infection.

So far in Italy, more than 4,000 public health workers have been infected with the virus and 66 doctors have unfortunately lost their lives.
