This is the first operation in Europe. Both of the young man's lungs had been "burned" by Covid-19, and within a few days he was unable to breathe. Francesco did not suffer from any disease, but the damage caused by the coronavirus to him was irreparable, according to ANSA.
The whole story started on March 2 when the 18-year-old started having a fever. On March 6, he was admitted to intensive care unit at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. Two days later he was intubated and on March 23 he was connected to the Ecmo device.
During this time his lungs were severely damaged, and in mid-April, San Raffaele doctors, in collaboration with those at the polyclinic, decided that the young man should undergo a transplant.
The boy was placed on an urgent waiting list on April 30, and less than two weeks ago the long-awaited turning point: a suitable organ was identified, donated by a dead person in another Region and negative to the coronavirus.
