The damage caused to the citrus fruits of Xarra, Mursia, and Konispol after Thursday's storm is estimated at almost 10 thousand tons.
This is the biggest storm that has hit this region in the last 20 years and the damage has been tremendous. Farmers say almost 10-20% of the product is found on the ground while the rest of the damage is found on the trees. Tangerines have already started to rot and are covered in dark spots. Agronomists say that this amount of production is not possible to go to the market.
"This tangerine is cracked and it is finished, so it is indisputable that it cannot go to the market. The hail has hit all the shots that are the basis of production for the coming year. If we would get 5 grains from a new shoot, now we will get 1 or 2 and that is an extremely big loss.”
"This damage is colossal, so great that there is no other way to replace it but with state subsidies."
"These trees need to be sprayed urgently to somehow ensure their recovery, which means there will be extra costs."
