Albanians picking cherries in Greece |
During the last hours, it seems that the urgency for seasonal Albanian workers in Greece has reached its peak, even at more alarming levels than a few months ago, when there was a demand for picking cherries and peaches.
Tangerines and olives are the keywords of Greek owners. Greek media report that 10 thousand hectares of tangerines have been planted in Thesprotia alone, while the olives of Crete and other areas must be harvested urgently.
Three Greek mayors request in a letter to the Minister of Civil Defense, Nikos Hardalias, to open the border with Albania for these seasonal workers: “With this situation, we are going through due to the coronavirus, we are providing low-paid employees from Africa. They are legal and hardworking, but the local community is concerned, like most African and Pakistani workers do not undergo coronavirus testing, and individual protection measures against the spread of the virus are not faithfully adhered to."
