North Macedonia remains the country with the highest infection and death rates from covid-19 in terms of population in the region. Since the beginning of the pandemic 68,332 people have been infected while 1949 have died.
The treatment of patients in infectious hospitals has undergone changes in terms of medications used by doctors. Of concern is the fact that the numbers of those affected in recent weeks have been increasing.
Ilir Demiri, the COVID Coordinator at the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Skopje, says that the increase in mortality is related to the increase in new cases.
But he stressed the fact that in the policies pursued by North Macedonia, any person who dies from other diseases but has tested positive for covid-19 is considered a victim of coronavirus.
"All patients who are with COVID-19 and die due to other diseases are counted as victims of coronavirus and therefore the numbers are higher," he said in an interview with Euronews Albania.
Dr. Demiri underlined that, "the most endangered age group remains those around 50" and people suffering from "obesity and hypertension are more at risk and have gone worse during treatment."
As for the cases of deaths without concomitant diseases or fatalities at a young age, the doctor said that this is very much related to the lack of immunity.
