Kosovo has provided 500,000 anti-COVID-19 vaccines from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, announced the acting Minister of Health of Kosovo, Armend Zemaj.
In a Facebook post, Zemaj said that the confirmation for thiswas given by Pfizer representatives, during a virtual meeting held on Tuesday.
"In addition, Kosovo will receive from the COVAX mechanism 360,000 free vaccines for 20 percent of the population," said Zemaj, adding that the vaccine will be given free of charge to all citizens of Kosovo.
Zemaj did not say when these vaccines are expected to arrive in Kosovo.
COVAX is a program of the World Health Organization, which aims to distribute the vaccine against COVID-19 disease even in poorer countries.
Kosovo has applied for the provision of vaccines in COVAX since December 7.
Last week, the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, said that he has provided 500,000 vaccines from the Pfizer company and that a part of them will be distributed to Kosovo.
The American company Pfizer has created the vaccine against COVID-19 in cooperation with the German company BioNTech and it is said that its efficiency is 95 percent.
The Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine was first introduced on December 8 in the United Kingdom.
It is now available in all European Union countries, in the US, Canada, and several other countries.
Health workers and the elderly have priority in the vaccination.
