Ambassador Yuri Kim says party leaders will be held accountable for their candidate lists

The US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim, said on Sunday the leaders of political parties will have direct responsibility for the lists they will present on Monday to the Central Election Commission.

Through a message posted on Twitter, Ambassador Kim clarified that the US has openly asked the parties to be careful in the candidacy of MPs, they must be "clean" people with integrity and worthy of representing the citizens. She said that tomorrow it will be seen whether "the US message is understood or not".

Tomorrow is the deadline for parties to submit candidate lists for the April 25 elections. 🇺🇸 has been extremely clear about the responsibility of leaders to ensure clean candidates, including with respect to 🇦🇱’s laws & designations by the US Secretary of State. So have Albania’s voters...

Albanians from all walks of life tell me that their greatest concern is that corruption, lack of transparency & impunity threaten their children’s future. The lists submitted by parties tomorrow will show us...

..whether Albania’s leaders have understood the message from 🇺🇸, whether they are committed to EU membership & whether they are willing to make the tough decisions necessary for a more democratic & prosperous future for Albania. We expect party heads to demonstrate true leadership.

We will hold party leaders accountable. We will also strongly support the Central Election Commission as it reviews the submission of candidate lists, which is a duty that should be undertaken first & foremost on behalf of Albanian voters.
