Sweden no longer recognizes Yugoslavia as the birthplace of Kosovo Albanians

In order to have more accurate statistics and a complete census of Kosovo Albanians in Sweden, the government has decided to recognize Kosovo in documents as its birthplace and not the former Yugoslavia.

If you were born in Kosovo and meanwhile have Yugoslavia registered in public accounting in Sweden you can now correct it.

The decision came after more than two years of intensive work and thanks to crucial help from the Kosovo Embassy in Sweden, it is now possible for all Swedish-Albanians who want to register correctly. This also makes it possible to finally get accurate information on how many Swedes are from Kosovo as most of them today are only registered as former Yugoslavs.

The Swedish State Skatteverket website can consider whether it is of great importance for an individual to be registered in public accounting as being born in the country with the new name, if the person was born there or a citizen of a country that after the birth of the person has become independent or for some other reason has changed their name. For example, a person born in 1963 in Kyiv, the USSR can instead be registered as born in Kyiv, Ukraine.

To make a change, you must contact the Swedish Tax Agency in person, either by letter or e-mail or digital contact form, and indicate your personal information, that you want to change the registration of the country of birth from Yugoslavia that no longer exists, in Kosovo and refer to the paragraph and justify this action "that it is very important to correct this".
