Cameras in 5200 polling stations in Albanian elections to monitor the process

The novelty of the April 25 elections in Albania will be the high use of technology. In addition to biometric identification of voters across the country, there will be monitoring cameras in all polling stations. The Central Election Commission (CEC) approved the instruction on their functioning procedures on April 25.

In the April 25 election, for the first time, we will have increased use of technology. In addition to electronic identification throughout the country and piloting electronic voting in unit no. 10 in Tirana, for the first time in every polling station throughout Albania there will be cameras that will monitor everything that will happen on April 25.

Yesterday, the CEC Regulatory Commission approved the instruction on the procedures for handing over the video recording camera in the indoor environment of the Voting Center. Regarding this technological innovation for April 25, the member of the CEC Regulatory Commission, Dritan Çaka said that the cameras will prevent or stop in some way the phones in the polling station, to not allow the phenomenon of photographing the vote.

"Cameras will be installed in 5200 polling stations. The position will be such that it will enable the observation of the whole hall but without being able to identify the vote in the secret room. "If the citizen is identified as filming the ballot, the ballot paper will not be inserted in the box but will be inserted in the damaged ballot papers", said Dritan Çaka.

Meanwhile, high-resolution recording cameras and monitors for the display of ballots before their evaluation at the polling station will be installed on the counting table in such a way as to enable the recording of the evaluation of each ballot paper. The film recording is broadcast in real-time on monitors placed in front of election observers, stored in electronic media, and submitted to the Central Election Commission along with other election materials.
