German Minister Roth says Albania has met the conditions to start negotiations

The German government deems that Albania has met the conditions to start negotiations for membership in the European Union and for this it is working together with other countries of the union on June 22 in the European Council to decide positively to hold the first intergovernmental conference.

This was stated at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama by German Minister for Europe Michael Roth.

"You know that there were conditions for Albania and we can say… and this is the position of my government, that Albania has achieved. That is why we are working for the European Council to take the right decision on June 22," said Minister Roth, who underlined that the EU envisages a 12 billion euro investment project for the Western Balkans.

"Politics is based on facts and the facts about Albania and North Macedonia show that both countries should start negotiations," Roth continued, acknowledging that there was a stalemate in the RMV integration process.

In his speech, the German minister promised more commitment to resolving the issue between Skopje and Sofia. He reminded that during the German EU presidency the negotiation for the solution of the problem has been constant and that this is being followed by the Portuguese presidency.
